Natural diamonds have been used for industrial grinding for a long time. After being extracted from underground, they are transported to factories for processing, where gem grade diamonds are separated from industrial diamonds through systems including X-ray machines and manual sorting. These small and poor quality stones, also known as "round stones", can be used for equipment such as grinding wheels, drills, and dressing tools.
Synthetic industrial diamonds used for grinding wheels can be manufactured in one of the following two ways:
High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT)
Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD)
In the HPHT method, the material used to manufacture diamonds is placed in a high-pressure and high-temperature environment to form diamonds.
In the CVD method, the material used to manufacture diamonds is placed in a vacuum chamber and then carbon gas is added to form diamonds.
Both natural and synthetic industrial diamonds are crushed, ground, cut, shaped, and polished into customizable sizes and shapes. Next, the particles are bonded together to form a grinding wheel or cutting tool, typically using metal, resin, ceramic materials, or single-layer electroplating onto a metal substrate.
