Diamond concentration is a parameter that reflects the amount of abrasive grain contained in the working layer of a grinding wheel. It determines how densely the diamond particles are packed, which directly affects the number of active grains, the spacing between grains, the chip clearance space, and the overall working state of the wheel layer.
A higher concentration does not automatically mean the wheel will perform better in a given application, and a lower concentration does not mean the wheel is of poorer quality. Concentration is only one variable in a balanced wheel design. The optimum level depends on how the wheel is used and what the operation demands, so judging a wheel by its concentration number alone can be misleading.
Concentration can never be evaluated in isolation. It must be considered together with grit size, bond type and the structure of the working layer, because these elements interact to determine how the wheel cuts, cools and wears. For this reason, it is not recommended to compare the performance of two wheels based only on a single concentration number. Two wheels with identical concentration can behave completely differently if their grit size, bond or structure differ.
| Factor | Higher Concentration | Lower Concentration |
|---|---|---|
| Active grain count | More grains per area | Fewer grains per area |
| Chip clearance space | Smaller | Larger |
| Typical benefit | Good for form holding and light finishing | Good for heavy removal and clogging-prone materials |
| Risk | Higher grinding force and heat | Faster layer wear if overloaded |
Diamond concentration is an important design parameter, but it is not a standalone indicator of wheel quality or performance. The right concentration balances grain count, chip space and working layer behavior against the contact area, grinding load, chip evacuation, bond type, grit size and profile retention needs of the specific application. Always evaluate concentration together with grit size, bond and working layer structure for a reliable grinding solution.
