Diamond electroplating process 1. Selection of diamond raw materials

(1) Select appearance: Under the premise of a certain cost, the purer the better. Pure diamond should be colorless and transparent, but in fact it often appears yellow-green due to impurities and defects. (2) Select usage performance: According to the JB2808-79 standard, diamonds are divided into four models: JR1, JR2, JR, and JR4. The higher the number, the higher the hardness, the better the quality, and the more expensive it is, but it does not mean that the more expensive it is, the better its performance will be. Although JR4 diamond has the highest hardness, it is not as sharp as JR3 diamond. Generally, the two are mixed to maintain good performance and reduce production costs.

2. Magnetic separation and impurity removal

Because metal catalysts are used in the synthesis process of artificial diamond, there will be some inclusions, so it is generally magnetic. The higher the inclusion content, the stronger the magnetism. Highly magnetic diamond not only has many impurities, low strength, and poor heat resistance, but also because the magnetic inclusions are conductive, it will make the insulation of the diamond particles worse, which will have a negative impact on the quality of electroplating and easily form nickel tumors. 3. Degreasing

Diamond and electroplated workpieces generally need to be degreased with industrial alkali and then cleaned with ultrasonic waves.

4. Pre-plating

In order to ensure that the diamond and the matrix can be firmly combined, an electroplating layer must be wrapped on the surface of the workpiece before electroplating diamond. If the substrate is stainless steel, it must be pre-plated. If the substrate is carbon steel, it does not need to be pre-plated.

The electrolyte is heated to 50°C, and the workpiece is placed into an electrified plating bath. After the metallic nickel reacts with the plating solution, nickel ions will be deposited on the surface of the workpiece to form a thin electroplating layer.

5. Electroplating

To encrust diamond particles on the electroplated layer of the workpiece, there are usually sand burial methods and falling sand methods.

The falling sand method completes the sanding of one surface at a time, which is more suitable for single-sided diamond-plated products;

The sand burial method is to bury the products that require diamond electroplating in diamond particles, so it is more suitable for cylindrical or other irregular products.

Their principles are the same. After the electroplating solution and the workpiece are energized, diamond particles are deposited on the pre-plated workpiece. Under the action of the electric field, nickel will decompose and release nickel atoms, which will be deposited on the workpiece that already has diamond particles. The diamond on the surface will be gradually wrapped to form a diamond coating.

6. Washing and drying

After the electroplating is completed, use clean water to rinse some of the electroplating solution and diamond particles left between the diamond particles, and then use hot air to evaporate the water on the surface of the product. In this way, an electroplated diamond product is completed.
